RiverRidge Programs:
The Academy of Environmental Sciences (AES)
Don't just learn about the environment...Become a part of it!
These high school environmental science courses provide students with the total scientific experience by combining the collaborative power of online learning with the comprehension of authentic field-based research. Our courses begin in a virtual classroom and introduce students to a series of online activites specifically selected to correlate with investigations they will conduct in the field. By collaborating with a highly qualified science educator, students work together to develop the knowledge and skill set they need to successfully complete their onsite research projects. Through this online experience, students complete and discuss course learning objectives, produce presentations, develop digital portfolios, and collaborate with each together. Then they travel to one of our chosen locations to carry out authentic, collaborative, environmental research and apply the skills they learned in our virtual classroom. Once they return from their expedition, students revisit the virtual classroom and share their digital portfolios and finish course requirements. Students who complete AES courses learn how to excel in an online environment, travel around the world to explore exotic ecosystems, participate in environmental research, investigate the work of highly proactive environmental organizations, and experience life through the eyes of a different culture. The first course we are offering is Conservation Biology. Our chosen location for the onsite component of this course is Costa Rica. The dates for this adventure are April 4th - April 12, 2009.
