July 12th - July 16th

Adventure Camp is for rising 9th through 12th graders who are interested in the outdoors and would like to explore the breathtaking wilderness of the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia.  Although no backpacking or canoeing experience is necessary, it is very important that children who are registered for this camp session are in good physical condition.  During the backpacking experience, campers will need to hike about eight miles per day while caring about 20 - 30 pounds in their backpack.  Campers will also have to provide their own camping equipment.  Recommendations on what is needed will be provided in the welcoming package.  Three meals a day plus snacks will be provided.  Campers are expected to help prepare meals and wash dishes.  Topics like teamwork; self-reliance; observation, inquiry, analysis, and drawing conclusions; backpacking skills; the components of a watershed; and the importance of environmental awareness and protecting environmental quality will be addressed.

The week will begin with a three-day backpacking expedition through Shenandoah National Park.  Our campers will hike through cathedral hardwood forests, cool off in pristine mountain streams, experience native wildlife, and learn why these natural places are worth protecting.  The final two days will be spent canoeing 24 miles of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River.  We will be transported to Fort Stover (just north of Luray, Virginia) by the Downriver Canoe Company.  We will paddle 12 miles downriver on the first day and camp out at the Golden Rock Campground.  Late afternoon will be spent swimming, playing frisbee, eating s-mores by the campfire, and peering out into a sky full of stars.  Many folks feel this is the most beautiful spot on the Shenandoah River.  The final day will be spent paddling the 12 miles from Compton back to Bentonville where parents will pickup their children at Downriver Canoe Company on Friday afternoon.  It is very important that campers are in good physical condition before registering for this camp experience.
