The RiverRidge Foundation For Environmental Research and Education is a nonprofit, 501 (c) (3) corporation. Our mission has four objectives:  1) to create an understanding and appreciation of Earth’s ecological resources, (2) to generate a public concern for local and global environmental quality, (3) to develop a well informed community of citizens who make smart environmental decisions, and (4) to share research results with a global community.

The educational philosophy, inherent in all our programs, is centered around adventure, exploration, and discovery.

Earn four undergraduate or graduate university credits through Virginia Commonwealth University by completing the courses offered through our Academy of Environmental Sciences.
Children from around the Winchester-Warrenton-Purcellville area of Virginia, USA, can attend one of our summer day camp sessions in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.  Camp sessions are for kids in second through twelfth grade.  Are you from out of state?  High school students from any location can enjoy our Adventure Camp.  This session includes three days of backpacking through Shenandoah National Park and an overnight canoe trip down the Shenandoah River.  Shuttle service from Dulles International Airport is provided.

Notes from the Field

Notes from the Field is our newest section.  We want to feature your observations about the environment.  Do you keep a nature journal, write songs or poetry, or create artwork about the environment?  We want to feature your work here.  Send your entries to cpackert@riverridgefoundation.org.  To help us get started, Doug Pifer, artist, columnist, and self-taught naturalist will share the columns that he wrote for the Clarke County Courier called, "As The Crow Flies".
These entries will be featured biweekly.

RiverRidge is now using Twitter to keep our community updated on our current news and events.  Subscribe to these updates through this link.

RiverRidge has partnered with GLOBE (Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment), an international environmental education program funded by NASA and the NSF.  We will be offering teacher training opportunities for teachers who would like to become certified in the GLOBE program as well as embedding GLOBE protocols into all of our environmental programs.
The RiverRidge Foundation has won a national education competition...

The Source for Learning, Inc. (www.sourceforlearning.org) and the National Educational Broadband Service Association (www.nebsa.org) have teamed to sponsor a national contest that will explore how wireless broadband will change the delivery of educational methods. The RiverRidge Foundation's educational model has been accepted as the winning entry in this competition.  Click on the "Academy of Env. Sciences" link to learn more about our courses.

RiverRidge's Academy of Environmental Science courses have been accredited by Virginia Commonwealth University.  Now teachers, university students, and juniors and seniors in high school can earn university science credit for completing our environmental science courses.  Click on the Academy of Env. Sci. link to learn more.

New for the summer of 2009 is our 9th - 12th Grade Adventure Camp.  Highlights include a two-day canoe trip down the Shenandoah River and a three day backpacking trip in George Washington National Forest.  The goal of this camp is to promote a greater awareness of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.
